Tarapeeth is associated with Vashishtha Muni , son of Brahma and seeker of the divine Mother , goddess of Tantra . The legend goes that Muni having completed Tantric studies in mahacina came to the cremation ground of Chandipur and practised Tantra . Here , on a full moon Lakshmi Puja day in November under a white simul tree the female cosmic energy manifested herself , and the place gained the reputation of a Siddi Peeth where enlightenment is attained by spiritual quest . Tarapeeth was once Chandipur the site of a huge crematorium . The first temple is said to have been built by a rich merchant , Joy Dutt Saudagar , whose 12 yrs old son , dead of snake bite , came back to life when his body was floated on the river . Joy Dutt heard a voice telling him to erect a temple there for Ma Tara . The current temple was built in 1255 by Jagannath Rai of Mallarpur , but by the 16th century , the temple was in ruin Raja Ram Jiban rebuilt the temple in 1720 , and in the 169th century , the Raja of Natore had it renovated . The traditions of the Jains state that Mahavira their last great Tirthankara , wandered through these two trtacts in the 5th Century . B C and the description of them would seem to show that the eastern part of the district with its alluvial soil well watered by rivers , formed part of Rarh while the wilder and more rugged country to the west was aptly known as Vajjabhumi the country of Thunderbolt . Rarh was part of the territory rulled over by the Maurayans Emperors , and was subsequently included in the empire of the imperial Guptas of Shasankas and of Harshavardhan . After dismemberment of Harshas Empire it was include in the Pala kingdom and formed a part of it until middle of 12th Century AD when the overloadship passes to the Sena kings . In the 13th Century AD the district passes under the rule of the Muhammedans and according to some authorities , Lakhanor an importaint frontier post of Musalman territory , lay within its limits . After this , for many centuries the control of the Mohammedans over the Western part of the district appears to have been merely nominal and the country was left under the rule of Hindu chiefs called Bir Rajas . After the cession of the Diwani to the East India Company in 1765 Birbhum was administered from Murshidabad until 1787 . In that year in consequences of the unsettled state of the country , which required a separarate administration , it was constituted till 1793 , when Vishnupur was transferred to the Burdwan Collectorate . In 1809 the collectorship of Birbhum was abolished , and the district was again administered from Murshidabad an Assistant Collector remaining in charge at Suri . In 1820 , Birbhum was reconstituted as a separate district of Santhal Parganas and in this way four paraganas and a part of the fifth were detached from Birbhum .
Places to visit near Tarapith : TARAPITH TEMPLE : It is a small temple on banks of the Dwarka River in Birbhum , 264km from Kolkata . The temple is ancient and is though to be very lucky by Hindus . The royal temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeth in India . It is one of the most critical places where tantric rituals are still done today . It stays busy all year , and many poor people come here for a free meal . Legends say that one of Satis eye fell on Tarapith when Lord Shiva went on tour of the universe to mourn her loss . In honour of this supposed event , the villages name was changed from Chandipur to Tarapith , the Bengali word for the eyeball . The temple is therefore dedicated to Ma Tara . The Tarapith temple represents the destructive side of Lord Shiva . Hindu traditions says that Ma Tara is the second of the ten goddessed of great wisdom . The temple is an architectural masterpiece with many mysteries and exciting facts that make it a must see .
